JSC “Sea port of Saint-Petersburg” puts special emphasis on the nature protection activities. The berths of company are situated within the city limits of Saint-Petersburg. Taking this fact into consideration, “Sea port of Saint-Petersburg” uses the latest scientific and technical developments in order to reduce the adverse effect of production activity on the environment.
The annual programme of environmental activities is formed on the basis of federal and municipal regulations, as well as in compliance with the information received in the course of work in the framework of Ecological Partnership Association.
Port production activity is always connected with waste formation (nonstandard fertilizers, construction waste from dismantling of the buildings and constructions during reconstruction). Thorough waste handling gives the opportunity to recycle efficiently that waste that didn’t loose its consumer properties. Efficient waste handling saves significant money funds and minimizes environmental damage.
JSC “Sea Port of Saint-Petersburg” performs its environmental activities in accordance with the following targets of environmental policy of the Company:
-Decrease of adverse effect on the environment;
-Technical reequipment and modernization of equipment in order to increase the level of environmental security;
-Successful implementation of port environmental programmes and projects;
- Cost-effective use of resources;
-Use of “clean” technologies;
-Modernization of ecological management;
-Increase of environmental control.
The company carries out the set of measures aimed at air, land and water protection: the companies provide the systematic control of fulfillment of norms and requirements of the environmental and sanitary legislation, monitor the quality of the surface sewage waters and the air, control the volume of wastes and the frequency of their removal. The problem of cleaning the surface sewage waters is settled by means of construction of the local water treatment systems within the procedure of reconstruction of warehouses and outdoor storage grounds.
Decrease of the adverse effect on the environment is tightly connected with the increase of the financing of the environmental programme. In 2010 “Sea Port of Saint-Petersburg” transferred over 57 mln. rubles for environmental campaign.
Air protection
As a result of discharge control measures it has been discovered that the emissions from the controlled sources do not exceed maximum admissible concentrations. In future the company intends to decrease air pollution greatly by means of replacement of the bulk (“dusty”) cargoes by non-bulk cargoes.
Water protection
To decrease the adverse effect from discharge of sewage waters all the new facilities which are constructed within the development programme of the group of companies are equipped by the water treatment facilities and the local water treatment systems. Besides, the group of companies provides the systematic control over the use of water and shore area.
Waste management
Regularly JSC “Sea Port of Saint-Petersburg” carries out activities aimed at the decrease of the negative effect of the wastes on the environment: it controls the volume of wastes, places of their temporary storage and frequency of their removal.
